While many aspects of a patient’s diagnosis are out of your control, there are things you can do to improve the quality of life for both you and your loved one. The Cancer Caregiver Guide is here to help you every step of the way as you provide care to someone facing cancer.

NBCF’s free Cancer Caregiver Guide includes:

  • The information you need to get organized as a caregiver
  • The key roles—and challenges—of caregiving

Strengthen Your Mind-Body Connection

You are NOT your thoughts.

This can be difficult to remember when you get frustrated or overwhelmed, but it is an important distinction to make. Whether you are a cancer patient, survivor, caregiver, loved one, or simply looking to strengthen your mind-body connection, practicing mindfulness can help you center your thoughts and bring you back to contentment.

Thanks to the beauty of mindfulness, you can reinvigorate your thoughts and beliefs about who you are and what you are capable of.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is being fully present in the moment, and aware of your thoughts, feelings, and environment in a nurturing way. It involves accepting your feelings and thoughts without judgment and focusing on the present moment, rather than the past or future.

There is a powerful connection between mental health and physical health—a true mind and body connection—and a strong mindset can make a tremendous difference during life’s challenges.

In our free guide, 10 Prompts to Mindfulness, you’ll receive:

  • Information on self-limiting beliefs and how to overcome them
  • Encouraging affirmations for everyday use
  • Short prompts that incorporate gratitude, reflection, compassion, self-love, and more
  • Tips on beginning a meditation or guided breathing practice to support your mental, emotional, and physical health

Annie Cavalier is a clinical registered dietitian who works at one of the largest hospitals in Dallas. She attended the University of Texas at Austin for her bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics and received her master’s degree in nutrition from Texas Woman’s University. Annie’s interest in nutrition was sparked when she was 12 years old, and her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. With the help of a friend who is a chef, Annie’s family learned how to prepare healthy, delicious food that her mother was able to eat during treatment. Noticing how much of an impact food and nutrition had on overall health and well-being, Annie set out to learn more about the science behind food and its relationship to health.

Annie runs her own nutrition and lifestyle website, My Healthful Life, which she plans to grow into a private practice. In addition to writing articles for her own website, Annie has also written for the University of Texas Department of Kinesiology’s Fitness Institute of Texas, Southern Dallas Magazine, and more. This is her second publication with the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Recurrence eBook: Volume 2

The most frequently asked question for women who have had breast cancer is: What are the chances it will recur?

With the aim of answering a wide range of questions while providing support, empowerment, and education, a free Q&A follow-up to our first Recurrence eBook delves deeper into breast cancer recurrence and related issues.

Created by National Breast Cancer Foundation and Lillie Shockney, former Director of Johns Hopkins Breast Center, nurse, and two-time breast cancer survivor, this second volume addresses common questions from patients, survivors, and caregivers about recurrence from the perspective of a cancer survivor and expert in the field. No topic is off-limits.

Topics include:

  • The risk of recurrence
  • Local vs. distant recurrence, including signs and symptoms of both
  • Treatment options
  • Hormone therapy
  • Follow-up care
  • Coping with anxiety
  • The latest research and statistics

“Fear of recurrence is the #1 concern for women who have had breast cancer. Even if they had Stage 0, they are often just as frightened as those who had Stage 3. Giving patients the ability to get their head around recurrence is key to not letting it monopolize their thoughts. To women who have faced breast cancer, don’t allow cancer to be in charge.” – Lillie Shockney, former Director of John Hopkins Breast Center & two-time survivor

There is great information in this eBook! I’m so glad NBCF produced it to discuss the variables regarding chances of recurrence.” – Camille, two-time breast cancer survivor

Not all hope helps. Our new eBook can help you find healing hope.

Cancer comes with many challenges: making difficult decisions, dealing with side effects and uncertainty, grieving losses, and adjusting to change. One challenge no one talks about is finding the best hopes for getting good care and living as fully as possible.

Our latest eBook Finding Hope that Heals, written by Wendy S. Harpham, MD, guides patients and caregivers to strengthen hopes that help and to let go of those that may harm. Along with powerful insights and inspiration, the eBook offers practical exercises you can do anywhere.

“Wendy tells you how to nourish hope that heals—realistic hope, honest hope, hope that can keep you from wasting time and energy on despair, denial or wishful thinking…” —Jane Brody, NY Times

The mission of NBCF revolves around hope. We want to change the conversation that often ends with a rallying cry to “Have hope!” Instead, we want that to start a new conversation about which hopes can help you today, how to nurture them, and how to let go of those that might harm.

We’re honored that Dr. Harpham created this exciting eBook with us. Her award-winning writing and patient advocacy work demonstrate her dedication to patients. Her own remarkable survival through and beyond cancer serves as testimony to the power of healing hope to help you live your best life, whatever the circumstances.

“I thoroughly enjoyed this eBook and am excited that others can use its message, too. Now I’m off to do my ‘hope-work’!” —Pat Battaglia, metastatic cancer survivor, Associate Program Director, Breast Cancer Coalition Rochester

Do you know if you have dense breasts?

Throughout her journey with breast cancer, Joan Lunden, triple-negative breast cancer survivor & longtime Good Morning America anchor, learned by chance that she had dense breast tissue. No one had ever specifically told her this information or why it’s important to know.

According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 50% of all women age 40 and older have dense breasts. Like Joan, many women don’t know whether they have dense breasts or what that means.

Knowing whether you have dense breasts is important because women with dense breasts have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, and often need supplemental screenings to a mammogram.

Our Dense Breasts Q&A Guide answers these commonly asked questions:

  • What are dense breasts?
  • How do women know if they have dense breasts?
  • How common are dense breasts?
  • What contributes to having dense breast tissue?
  • Do dense breasts feel different when performing a breast self-exam?
  • Does having dense breasts increase the likelihood of developing breast cancer?
  • Is additional screening needed if a patient has dense breasts?

When it comes to your health, you are your own biggest advocate. This free guide aims to educate you about dense breasts and how to be your own best advocate for your health.

Get Candid Information About Breast Cancer Recurrence

NBCF conducted a survey of breast cancer survivors and discovered that the #1 topic of interest for these women is risk of recurrence.

Breast cancer is a heavy topic, and the idea that cancer can come back can be daunting. That’s why we partnered with Lillie D. Shockney, former Director of the Johns Hopkins Breast Center, nurse, and two-time breast cancer survivor, to create this Recurrence eBook. Lillie has written 15 books and over 200 articles about cancer.

Lillie comes at the subject from every angle—expert, medical provider, and patient. Her input is invaluable and easy to read, and every breast cancer patient can benefit from her knowledge. Since not everyone will have the fortune to meet Lillie in person, we wanted to provide her candid advice the best way we could.

Topics include:

  • What is Recurrence?
  • Follow-Up Care
  • Side Effects vs. Symptoms
  • Hormonal Therapy
  • Coping with Fear of Recurrence
  • Risk of Metastatic Recurrence
  • Outcomes with Recurrence
“It’s a scary thing to think about developing distant recurrence and having metastatic disease, but we have more to offer today than we’ve ever been able to offer before.”
LILLIE D. SHOCKNEY
