Austin’s got two new food businesses to know about this past summer and fall. There’s a new takeout/delivery restaurant Matsuba Ramen and the third location of halal Nashville-style hot chicken truck Bussin Buns.
Matsuba Ramen is a ghost kitchen restaurant found within the GhostLine Kitchens in ghost kitchen restaurant at 3400 Comsouth Drive, Suite 120, Window 7 in the McKinney neighborhood as of mid-August. Owner and chef Kazu (no last name provided) focuses on paitan ramen, which is made of creamy chicken broth with various mix-ins such as tender chicken and/or pork chasus, eggs, vegetables, and more, alongside appetizers like karaage and shumai. Its hours are from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily. Takeout and delivery orders can be placed online or in person; there are outdoor dine-in areas.
And then, Bussin’s third food truck is found in the Eubank Acres neighborhood at 11331 North Lamar Boulevard as of October 14. The menu remains the same: spicy halal fried chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, and chicken wings, along with fries, and mac n cheese. Austin restaurants run Florida hurricane disaster relief fundraiser
Instagram food influencer Austin Food Adventures is hosting another restaurant-focused fundraiser to help benefit the World Central Kitchen’s efforts in feeding people impacted by Hurricanes Milton and Helene in Florida. The Dine With Florida fundraiser takes place on Saturday, October 19. Most of the participating restaurants will donate 10 percent of their day’s proceeds with some donating five percent. The list of 30 restaurants includes Eldorado Cafe, Choo Sando, Bill’s Oyster, 1618 Asian Fusion, Comadre Panaderia, and many others.
Austin restaurant chain is leaving Texas
Now that Austin-based and -born chain Chuy’s was acquired by national restaurant company Darden in July, it’ll be moving its headquarters to Florida, per Austin Business Journal. The move hasn’t officially happened yet, but the Texas restaurant company’s main office will be in Orlando.
Tracking Austin food truck news
A new food truck opened at the Liberty ahead of the dive bar’s 15th birthday. Pan-Asian food truck Manna opened in mid-September, taking over the space previously occupied by Detroit-style pizza truck Bat City Pies (which is Buzz Mill).
Austin pizza truck Side Eye Pie closed down its slice-focused truck Side Eye Slice parked at the McKinney neighborhood location of Radio/East sometime in early October. Taking over its place is another location of chicken wing truck Tommy Want Wingy as of October 8.
Best Central Texas breweries ranked
Austin Chronicle released its annual ranking of the best Central Texas breweries this week. Topping the list is the McKinney brewery Meanwhile Brewing, for its expansive for-everyone space and “creative, platinum-quality beers.”
New Austin beers
Speaking of Meanwhile, the brewery released two new beers this fall. First, it teamed up with Austin pizzeria Home Slice Pizza for a new collaboration beer. The Queens of Pints beer is an Italian-style lager. The businesses are hosting a party at Home Slice’s North Loop location on Wednesday, October 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. with carnival games, a marching band, a special food menu, and the beers.
And then, Meanwhile also crafted a beer honoring Formula One racer Daniel Ricciardo, since F1 is happening in Austin this weekend. The Ricciardo Lager is an Australian lager only available at the McKinney neighborhood taproom.
Tracking Austin pop-ups
Austin chef AJ Grigson of Mexican restaurant Suerte is running a noodle pop-up at the Mexican restaurant’s sibling Bar Toti in Cherrywood next week. Nightshift Noodles’ menu includes dan dan noodles, liang mian, chile-garlic noodles, and Sichuan candied nuts. The bar will also serve special drinks such as the Takeout Box (mezcal, nigori sake, grapefruit cordial, lime, and black cardamom salt) and the Shake-Up Street (tequila blanco, yuzu, and a lemon-yaupon syrup). It takes place on Tuesday, October 22 from 5 to 10 p.m.
Former Longhorn footballer’s mustard events
Atlanta Falcons football player and former Longhorn Bijan Robinson is going to be in Austin this weekend with his branded condiment, Bijan Mustardson, as part of the big University of Texas at Austin versus the Georgia Bulldogs game on Saturday, October 19. This includes a burger pop-up by Georgia restaurant BFA Burger at Austin Asian-Texan-Mexican barbecue truck Si Baby-Q on Barton Springs on Friday, October 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. with a double-smash burger and mustard smoked chicken wings. It’s $40 for a burger, brisket, and two drinks. Then there’s a tailgate at 2434 Guadalupe on campus with free hot dogs for the first 1,500 people plus games and drinks from 2 to 6 p.m.
Tracking outside-of-Austin food events
The Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival is happening later this month in the Hill Country town. The Grand Tasting — where people get to try bites from restaurants and wines from wineries and watch cooking and tasting demonstrations — takes place on Saturday, October 26 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Available tickets are $100 for locals from certain zip codes, $150 for general admission, and $295 for VIP. There are also other a la carte events before the tasting, such as a family-friendly one with Oro Bianco, a brunch at store Fischer & Wieser, and morning yoga.
